Policy Impact Area 6

Agriculture, Food & Beverages

Agriculture, food and wine are a vital part of South Australia’s economy and central to our identity as a state – in 2021-22 gross food and wine revenue reached a record $24 billion.

Responsibility for the development of South Australia’s food and wine industries sits across the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) and Department of Trade and Investment (DTI). Additionally, DTI is responsible for the implementation of the State Brand (Brand SA).

Impact summary

SA’s food and wine credentials boosted by festivals:

Dedicated food and/or wine and beverage festivals occur across South Australia all year round, the majority with the primary aim of engaging locals and visitors with the state’s food and beverage producers and providing local brands with a captive audience for marketing purposes.

All arts and cultural festivals, regardless of the size or theme, will offer food and beverage options for patrons. Often, the food and beverage element of the program can be a significant attractor (and expectation) of people attending the festival. Festivals can provide opportunities for local food and beverage producers to participate in the festival’s food and beverage offering, thereby providing them with a new or additional path to market and marketing opportunities. This, in turn, provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase and celebrate South Australia’s strengths in food and beverages – a key objective of Brand SA.

Additionally, flow-on benefits come from people attending festivals who may choose to visit nearby businesses to purchase food and beverages before or after visiting the festival, or if they have travelled from outside the region, may purchase and consume food and beverages for the additional days that they are in the area.
